Washington, D.C. (September 5, 2012) - Today the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced a new guide meant to help mobile application developers comply with "truth-in-advertising standards and basic privacy principles."
The guidelines state that once an app developer begins distributing his or her app, he or she becomes an advertiser, and thus is responsible for avoiding any false or misleading claims. In terms of privacy considerations, the guidelines encourage transparency and remind developers that they may be required to comply with COPPA.
This summer, the Alliance has convened its 10-city Privacy Summit Series to bring the conversation about privacy to developers across the U.S. FTC representatives have attended several of the Alliance Privacy Summit Series events, and Commissioner Julie Brill will be on the panel at the event in Boulder on October 2. Additional Privacy Series events are scheduled for Seattle (9/13) and Boston (9/20).
